Where did the Binchotan coal come from?
It was during the Edo Period (17th century) that a man named Binchuya Chozaemon made it popular, but the origins are not entirely clear. A form of Binchotan charcoal (sometimes referred to as 'white charcoal') is believed to have been introduced to Japan by a Japanese monk and scholar named Kukai 1,200 years ago.
What is the manufacturing process for Binchotan charcoal?
This ancient process of making Binchotan charcoal is very interesting and also intense. The wood must be heated to very high temperatures in a kiln and then cooled rapidly by being covered with a mixture of soil, sand and ash. This gives the coal a very hard, smooth appearance, and if you strike it, you will hear a clear metallic sound.
What makes a good water filter?
Binchotan charcoal not only removes impurities from water, but can also release minerals back into your bottle, improving health and taste. The surface of the charcoal is full of tiny holes, which attract contaminants like chlorine and trap them, keeping them away from your drinking water. There are so many holes in Binchotan coal that the surface area of just 1 gram is 500m².
What is the capacity of a carbon stick filter?
It will filter about 1.1L of water for 3 months if used every day. If you have a larger container or jar that you want to filter, increase the number of charcoal sticks accordingly.
How long does each stick last?
3 months if you use it every day and in our 'Eau Good' bottle, or another 800ml bottle. Then simply boil it for 10 minutes to 'recharge' the charcoal and use it for another 3 months.
Should I throw away my charcoal stick when I'm done?
Absolutely not, one of the wonderful things about this special coal is that it has so many great secondary uses. It can remove moisture from the air in your closet, helping to prevent your clothes from getting moldy. It also absorbs bad odors, so it's great for using in a cat litter box or diapers. It even adds nutrients to houseplant soil if you break it up and add it to the pot.
Does coal need to be washed or cleaned?
No need, you can go straight from the packaging to your bottle.
Can I add flavorings to my water if I also use a charcoal stick?
If you want to use your Binchotan charcoal water filter, you CANNOT add anything else to the pitcher or bottle.
Do you sell Binchotan charcoal alone?
We sell charcoal alone, just go to the Accessories page to see the products.
Is charcoal dangerous if ingested?
No, swallowing charcoal isn't dangerous. In fact, activated charcoal has many medical uses, including treating flatulence, high cholesterol, and stomach pain.
Can I wash my bottle with soap?
When washing your bottle, carafe, or other container with soap, be sure to remove the charcoal stick first.
