When was Binchotan charcoal first used?
About 1,200 years ago, a form of Binchotan charcoal, also called 'white charcoal', is thought to have been used in Japan by a Japanese monk and scholar named Kukai. But it wasn't until the Edo Period in the 17th century that it became truly popular.
How do you make Binchotan charcoal?
A kiln is set to a relatively low temperature to heat a piece of sustainably sourced wood for a long time. Towards the end of this heating process, the oven temperature is increased to 1000 degrees Celsius until the wood is glowing red hot. It is removed from the oven and placed under a combination of sand, earth and ash that cools it rapidly and leaves a white residue. This is why you may hear Binchotan coal referred to as 'white coal'. After this cooling process, the surface will become hard and smooth and if you hit it, it will make a metallic sound.
How does it filter out impurities?
Binchotan charcoal not only removes impurities, but is also able to release minerals like potassium back into the water. It is covered in tiny cavities that attract impure ions like chlorine and bind them to the carbon, leaving the water filtered. In fact, there are so many of these tiny holes that just 1 gram of coal has enough surface area to cover one-tenth the size of a football field!

What should I do with my charcoal stick when I'm done?
There are many things you can do with Binchotan charcoal after you're done using it: it removes bad odors if added to cat litter trays or trash cans, it removes moisture from the air if you put it in your closet or drawers, and it adds nutrients to the soil if you put it in with your houseplants (separate it first).
