What is the history of Binchotan charcoal?
Binchotan charcoal, often called 'white charcoal,' has a rich history, though its origins are unclear. It is believed to have been introduced to Japan by a scholar named Kukai and a monk around 1,200 years ago. It wasn't until the 17th century that it became popular, thanks to a man named Binchuya Chozaemon.

How is it done?
Making Binchotan charcoal requires a very rapid increase in temperature and then rapid cooling, which leaves a hard, smooth surface. If you tap it, you'll hear a clear metallic sound. The process involves taking sustainably sourced wood and carbonizing it at a low temperature in a kiln for a long time. Just before the end, the temperature is suddenly increased to around 1000°C until the wood is red hot. The earth, ash, and sand create a special powder that is used to quickly coat the charcoal after it's removed from the kiln. This process is what gives the charcoal its white hue (hence the name 'white charcoal').

How does it work?
It has a highly porous surface with tiny holes (or cavities) throughout the material. These tiny holes attract contaminants like chlorine and keep them on the surface of the charcoal, thus keeping them out of your drinking water. It also releases minerals like magnesium and iron into the water.

How much water can each charcoal filter?
One Binchotan charcoal stick can filter about 1.1 liters of water if used daily for 3 months. Simply increase or decrease the scale depending on the volume of water you'd like to filter.

How long will this last?
About 3 months if you use it daily with our 'Eau Good' range. You can then boil it for 10 minutes to 'recharge' it, making sure to let it dry in the sun. This recharge will make your charcoal last another 3 months.

What other uses does binchotan have?
Binchotan has many secondary uses after it's finished as a water filter: it adds nutrients to houseplant soil (simply break it up and add it to the pot), you can use it to deodorize a laundry basket, cat litter, or shoes, and it can even absorb moisture from the air, acting as a great dehumidifier in your closet.

Do I need to wash my charcoal?
No, it's ready to use straight from the packaging.

Can I use my binchotan with flavored water (fruit infusion or tea)?
No, do not use anything to flavor your water with Binchotan charcoal.

Can I wash my bottle with soap and leave the charcoal in it?
Make sure to remove the charcoal stick before washing your bottle with soap.

Where can I order more charcoal?
You can purchase more charcoal directly from our website, see the Accessories page.

Is it dangerous to swallow some charcoal?
No, swallowing small pieces of charcoal won't hurt. Sometimes, small particles or fragments can break off your charcoal stick and float in the water. You can simply rinse them off, but swallowing them isn't dangerous.

What's the best way to clean my bottle?
We recommend washing your bottle regularly with a bottle brush and hot, soapy water. You can also put the bottle in the dishwasher. The cap isn't sink-safe, but the silicone seal is sink-safe and easy to remove for a thorough cleaning.
